Drunk passenger relieves himself on female passenger's seat on JKF-Delhi flight; faces "action" from Air India; airline issues apology
Dubai: A drunk man allegedly urinated on the seat of a woman passenger on-board an Air India international flight, prompting the Civil Aviation Ministry to seek a report from Air India.
Twitter users are shocked. The incident came to light on August 31, when Twitter user, Indrani Ghosh, posted her mother’s ordeal on the social networking website.
The episode took place on Thursday, when Air India flight AI 102 was on its way to New Delhi from New York.
@indranidreams tweeted: “Disgraceful @airindiain yesterday on your flight AI102 from JFK to Delhi a drunk passenger removed his pants and peed on the seat my mother was sitting! She was travelling alone and is completely traumatised! Reply ASAP #AirIndia #Shameful”
@indranidreams tweeted about the incident only after she made a call to Air India’s call centre, and was dissatisfied with the response.
In a second tweet, she added: “@airindiain when I called to make a complaint the usual call centre guy following the script asked me to go to the website and write a feedback! Really? FEEDBACK!”
Explaining what had happened, @indranidreams added: “The details of the incident are extremely disturbing! One necessarily doesn’t prepare oneself to face such things. This was an afternoon flight and the incident happened post dinner (ample time to get drunk) what is AI’s response? What is happening? #ationalAirline #AirIndia”
India’s Union Minister, Jayant Sinha, saw Ghosh’s post and asked Air India to investigate the issue. @jayantsinha tweeted: “Please follow up immediately and report back to MoCA/DGCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation/Directorate General of Civil Aviation). Very unfortunate that your mother had to go through this harrowing experience.”
Twitter users who read Ghosh’s tweet, shared it and expressed shock.
Tweep @umuhajir posted: “Outrageous: especially ironic given many of us book parents on these flights because we (I guess mistakenly!) think they’ll feel more comfortable on @airindiain...”
After investigating the issue, Air India finally tweeted an apology today. The posted a note on Twitter: “We strongly condemn the incident perpetrated by a passenger on our flight AI102 of August 30, JFK to Delhi. Our sincere apologies to passengers of the flight inconvenienced by this act. Our cabin crew promptly went all out to alleviate the inconvenience of the passenger from the moment the incident occurred till the flight touched down at Delhi. While an airline has no control over the behaviour of an individual pax, our crew are trained to handle any situation with utmost care and concern.”
However, many felt that the apology was not enough and that Air India should have taken prompt action against the passenger.
@DhaniMarwar: “You have no control on the behaviour of the individual, but you do have control that he face consequences and seems it was none in this case.”
@sharanu_jawalgi: “This shameless, senseless idiot should be blacklisted permanently. He should not be allowed in airlines in future.
Air India replied that legal action was being taken against the flyer. In a follow up tweet, @airindiain posted: “#FlyAI : #AirIndia Further to our statement regarding incident on board AI 102 of 30th August, we would like to inform that details of the incident are being sent to appropriate authorities for probe, and, possibly put the passenger on NOFLYLIST.”
Some tweeps highlighted that there should be a limit to how much alcohol is served on flights.
Twitter user, @jagdish56891077 posted: “Why did you serve liquor to passenger if he was so much intoxicated?”
